At Mission Hospital, a team of highly specialized Critical Care/Emergency Services nurses have been trained and assigned to provide immediate clinical support for patients showing signs and symptoms of imminent medical crisis including stroke, sepsis, heart attack and other problems requiring immediate critical interventions. This Rapid Response Team has won the 2008 Ernest Amory Codman Award, which recognizes excellence in performance measurement. Two members of this award winning team, Mary Kay Bader and Beverly Neal join Melanie to discuss their roles in this clinical team! |

Mary Kay Bader Bio -
Mary Kay Bader, RN, has practiced in the field of neurological and critical care nursing for more than 27 years. In her current position as Neuro-Critical Care CNS, she focuses on every aspect of the surgical and non surgical neurological patient from emergency and operative phases to the critical care management and rehabilitation phases. Bader has lectured extensively regionally and nationally in the field of head injury, intracranial pressure, stroke, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, and various critical care topics. She has been privileged to receive numerous awards from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and has been an integral part of the clinical teams that have helped Mission Hospital earn two Ernest Amory Codman Awards from The Joint Commission. The first was awarded in 2000 for their work on traumatic brain injury protocol and, again in 2008 for their Rapid Response Team initiative demonstrating excellence in using outcomes measurement to improve the quality of care. Bader received her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana and her Master’s in Nursing from Loyola University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. She has earned certifications in both neurological and critical care as well as advance practice. In early 2008, she was inducted as a Fellow in the American Heart Association (FAHA) stroke council.
Beverly Neal Bio -
Beverly Neal, RN, is an expert in clinical practice. She currently practices at Mission Hospital as a Rapid Response Team nurse and critical care nurse in the Surgical/Trauma Intensive Care Unit. In 2007, she received the American Association of Critical Care Nursing Excellence in Clinical Practice Award and has been a presenter at National Teaching Institute and Critical Care Exposition. She is also an adjunct faculty member at National University and is currently teaching students earning their bachelor’s degree in nursing. Neal has been an integral part of the clinical team that helped Mission Hospital earn the 2008 Ernest Amory Codman Award for their Rapid Response Team initiative. This honor is awarded by the The Joint Commission, to a hospital or organization that demonstrates excellence in using outcomes measurement to improve the quality of care. Neal received both her Master’s of Science in Nursing and Clinical Nurse Specialist credentials from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, California after completing her undergraduate studies at La Roche College, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. |
